Blaine is rooted in the experiences of co-founder and winemaker Derek Flegal, a native of Napa Valley. After Derek’s dad, Philip Blaine Flegal, passed away unexpectedly in 2004, Derek set out on a journey, traveling for several years and settling for a time in both Spain and Argentina, working at vineyards and developing an appreciation for the winemaking process. He returned home with a new vision for his life and a passion for winemaking. He went back to school for a second degree, this time in enology, and built his career at a variety of wineries, including Outpost, Jericho Canyon, and Tamber Bey. Over the years, he has had the privilege to learn from the likes of Heidi Barrett, Aaron Pott, and Michel Rolland. He continues to have a working relationship with Thomas Rivers Brown in his role as the head winemaker at Platt Vineyard. Now, with the support of his friends and family, Derek is embarking on a new journey as founder of Blaine Wines. At Blaine, Derek sources distinctive grape varietals from exceptional vineyards throughout California and brings his experience and dedication to bear in crafting pure, focused, and transparent wines.
